"Then he -Jacob- dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it" Gen 28:12
“Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” John 1:51.
'Open heaven' has become a catch with Pentecostals and the idea behind it is that the heavens can only be opened by some activities on earth meaning that you have to do some things to get the heavens over you opened and the moment you stop, the heavens close up again. This kind of idea having been sold us over a long period of time has assumed a powerful place in our theology to the intent that you have well-meaning individuals raising prayer points on "Open Heavens".
When we lose sight of the Finished Work of Jesus, we resort to self-help and this is found mostly among those who downplay the significance of Calvary. So, when a preacher encourages you to do stuff to get the heavens over you open, know that he is dragging you into his ignorance of what Jesus has done.
The Old Testament was the shadow or type of what God intended to do on earth, but the New Testament is the reality or arch type of God's purposes for the earth, that's why the New Testament explains the Old Testament and not the other way around.
When Jacob was running from Esau he came to Bethel and in the night, he had a dream of ladders and angels. He saw a ladder that reached heaven from earth and saw angels trafficking to and fro the heaven and earth on it meaning that with the presence of this ladder, it will be practically impossible to stop the supply from heaven. So as far back as Genesis God revealed that He wanted a continuous flow of traffic between heaven and earth. Remember that ladder was a shadow.
Fast forward to the Gospel of John and watch as Jesus referred to the experience of Jacob in his talk with Nathaniel. He explained the mystery of Jacob's ladder by pointing to Himself as the vehicle by which angels can traffic between heaven and earth in their capacity as ministering servants to the heirs of salvation Heb 1:14.
Why has the phrase open heaven become a fancy catch among us today?
1, There's this erroneous belief that what we need is hidden in heaven and it will take effort and sacrifice on our part to bring it down
2, Another erroneous belief is that by our actions we can close d heaven over our head thereby making it impossible for God to help us
3, There's this over-emphasis on the Daniel 10 about the prince of Persia that withstood heaven's emissary to Daniel for 3 weeks, meaning that some Demonic entities can hold sway over a city or geographical location and lock it up against heaven so that nothing from heaven reaches the earth.
4, Total ignorance of the believers position in Christ
"And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus" Eph 2:6.
Here are my position on d 4 issues I raised above:
1, In Christ, whatever you need is already given
2 Peter 1:3
"His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." It's not hidden in heaven, it's hidden in ignorance, that's why Peter calls us to access all that's ours through knowledge of Christ, that means the more you know Him, the more you access all that's already given to you graciously.
Another point is that the coming of the Spirit to and in us means Heaven has been relocated to our heart, so we need to do what Paul advised us in
"that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus."
It’s all in you, acknowledge or become aware of, take possession, and live by it.
There's no activity or sacrifice by you that will aid or add to what Jesus has done to give perpetual open heaven, the heaven where you are seated, the heaven that's operating from inside you.
2, I make bold to declare that there's no sin you have committed or will commit that escaped d atonement. He shed His blood not to cover but to take away your sins once and for all time.
So, anybody telling you that by your sins or doings, the heaven is closed over you know next to nothing about God's grace which is greater than all our sins
Romans 5:20 "The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,"
That's why there's no condemnation for the believer for his sins are taken care of through the shedding of the blood of Jesus. The believer can't come into judgment for his sins because Jesus was judged not for his sins because He was sinless but for the sin of the whole world and sentenced to death for the wages of sin is death. So, the believer went to the judgment hall once in Christ and was declared not guilty because Christ bore his guiltiness and paid the supreme price which is death.
Moreover, the believer can't be under any curse that will close the heavens because Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law Gal. 3:13.
3, In these days when more emphasis is placed on intercession and rightly so, we have this habit of using Old Testament happenings to establish doctrines. It is wrong. The doctrines of the Church are drawn from the teachings of Jesus and His disciples. So, the event of Daniel 10 cannot be the experience of the believer now that Jesus through His one-off sacrifice has cleared the heavens of every rebelling spirit and cleansed it
"It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these."
"They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb ...." Rev 12:11a
The believer has taken over the authority Jesus exercised on earth, so we don't need angels to deal with any fallen spirit, one word from us sends them scampering in fear and moreover in Christ, we are their superior officers
"and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power."
So, the experience of Daniel is not the experience of the post-Cross believer.
There's no spirit being that dare oppose the believer now because Jesus made sure that they will remain defeated and in captivity to the believer forever.
Col. 2:15 New International Version
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them"
4, The greatest harm is done to a believer is any teaching that doesn't bring to the fore his position and standing with God as a result of the finished Work of Jesus. Such teaching is an abuse and a daylight robbery. Many teachings have made believers have an identity crisis and set them to embark on looking for what's not lost.
Look, you are seated where Christ is seated - at the right hand of majesty.
You have under your feet what Christ has under His feet
You are head over whatever Christ is head over
You are a citizen of Heaven, you can't be a persona non grata in your own country. So, you can't be praying for open heaven when your citizenship is guaranteed.
Let me end it here with this: The highest selling commodity in the Church today is Ignorance, don't buy it, let the knowledge of what Jesus has done for you rule your life and more especially your prayer points, don't join in the mass hysteria. You are complete, nothing is missing, Jesus made sure of that
I call you blessed!
